Garbage truck plows into Armco Credit Union in Butler
BUTLER, Pa. (KDKA) — A garbage truck crashed into the Armco Credit Union in Butler on Tuesday. The impact was so powerful, half of the truck was buried inside the building.
The Waste Management garbage truck barreled down the hill into the back of the credit union minutes before it was set to open its doors.
"I knew it was bad but never would have imagined it would be something like that," said Cassie Merryman, who works in the building across the street on Hollywood Drive.
She says she was walking into work when she heard a truck horn blaring then several loud booms before realizing a garbage truck had crashed into the credit union.
"It was scary. We looked out my office window and everyone was running out of the credit union," Merryman said.
Police say the garbage truck came down a hillside, crossed over the intersection at Hansen Avenue and collided into the bank near the ATM drive-thru.
The driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries to his head and arm. It's unclear what caused the driver to lose control.
"For as long as I heard the horn, he had to have it on from the top of the hill, cause it was for a long times, so for him to cross four different lanes of traffic and have no one there ..." Merryman said.
"If it happened again, I don't think there's a chance of someone not being in one of those lanes of travel," she added.
In a statement to KDKA-TV, the CEO of Armco Credit Union says in part: "We are incredibly thankful no one was hurt. While we can rebuild, the well-being of our people is irreplaceable."
The credit union is closed until further notice.
