Furry Tails: Saving Snickers

She went from saving the day to the one desperately in need of saving.

Snickers is a 1-year-old Shar Pei mix from Texas. The playful dog was hailed a hero after injuring herself while helping to save her family from a house fire, but then her story took a sad turn when she was dumped at a shelter.

KDKA sister station KTVT-TV reports that with Snickers' time getting short, hopes began fading that this brave dog would ever get a second chance.

Before ending up at Texas' Glen Rose Animal Shelter, Snickers was a family dog.

When fire broke out in that family's RV, Snickers is credited with getting her humans out alive. It happened while they slept, and Snickers managed to wake them up and everyone escaped.

But Snickers burned her paws in the process.

Recently, Snickers' family had to move, reports KTVT-TV. They surrendered her to Glen Rose, where for a month there was very little interest from potential adopters.

Because of that, shelter officials began to worry they would have to make a heartbreaking decision. Euthanize this vibrant, playful, hero dog.

"She's a brave girl that saved her family and I don't understand how nobody wouldn't want a dog like that," Animal Control Officer Loretta Adams told KTVT-TV. "She could potentially save your life."

But after getting the word out about her story, Snickers is now getting a second chance. On the Glen Rose Animal Shelter's Facebook page, they report that Snickers went home with a new family on Friday.

They say she'll have lots of toys, playmates and room to run at her new home.

The shelter calls it: "A wonderful new start with a wonderful new family!!!"
