Furry Tails: Police In N.C. Investigate Family Pet's Disturbing Death

"She had no idea what was coming."

The heinous killing of a sweet little dog in North Carolina is grabbing national headlines.

Libby, the beagle, was a rescue dog who beat many odds. She was both blind and deaf but managed to love life – lying in the sunshine and greeting everyone with love and affection.

But, last week, that all changed. Libby's lifeless body was found last Thursday by a family friend of her owners. She had been decapitated during a suspected burglary, reports CBS affiliate WBTV in N.C.

The suspect reportedly jumped over a fence to get into the family's yard.

As you can imagine, Libby's graphic and disturbing death have rattled her family and the neighborhood where she lived.

To make matters worse, her head is still missing and the suspect made off with a "shovel, ax, sledgehammer and propane tank" from her owners' shed, according to WBTV's report.

Also, Libby's owners tell the media they have told their children that the dog died, but had to leave out the troubling and sickening details of her death. And they are now keeping their other two family dogs close.

The local police department in N.C. is investigating Libby's death and the burglary.

And now, the area animal shelter has also joined the investigation. They are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.
