Pleasant Hills Man Killed In Freak South Carolina Highway Mishap While On Vacation

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- David Sippey, 45, of Pleasant Hills, was supposed to be vacationing with his family this week in Myrtle Beach; instead, his family is planning a funeral.

Sippey, a father of three, was with his children, wife and sister-in-law, driving his minivan last Friday afternoon on a highway in South Carolina, just a few miles from their vacation destination, when the accident happened.

Sister-in-law Kristy McCluskey said a canvas luggage container blew off the rack on the car roof.

She said Sippey stopped the vehicle and when he walked over to retrieve it from the highway, he was struck and killed by a passing motorist.

The Highway Patrol says Sippey was hit by Mercedes, driven by a man in his late 60s. The driver stopped after the accident.

McCluskey told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti that her sister, Kellie, met Sippey nearly 16 years ago.

They were in a wedding together. She described him as a family-oriented man who was a great husband, father, son and son-in-law.

McCluskey has set up a GoFundMe page to help the family "in the days, weeks and months ahead."

Sippey's funeral has been set for Thursday.
