From Virus To Vaccine: COVID-19 & The Black Community

In an hour-long special, Lynne Hayes-Freeland is joined by a panel of experts to discuss the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on the Black community, why there's hesitancy among the Black community to get the shot and answers questions regarding the vaccine itself.

Joining Lynne for this special is Dr. Claudia Kregg-Byers, assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing; Dr. Jerome Gloster, the Chief Medical Officer at Primary Care Health Services; Dr. Rhonda Johnson, a retired healthcare professional; Dr. Lisa Issac, a retired physician, and Dr. Utibe Essien, an associate professor at University of Pittsburgh's School of Medicine.

Part 1

In the part one, Lynne explores the history of vaccinations and the Black community. Then she is joined by her panel of experts.

Part 2

In part two, Lynne Hayes-Freeland is joined by her panel of experts to answer questions about the COVID-19 vaccination from members of the Black community and then KDKA's Royce Jones talks to the owners and patrons of a barbershop in Wilkinsburg about how they feel about the vaccine, pandemic, and the history surrounding it.

Part 3

In part three, the panel of experts takes a question regarding how long it can take between receiving the COVID-19 vaccination and being immunized.

Part 4

In part four, KDKA's Bryant Reed explores the question: "What influence do the church and faith have on the Black community when it comes to health?" Then, the panel discusses community influence on information, health, and more.

Part 5

In part five, the panel takes a question from a viewer regarding how long the COVID-19 vaccination will protect people from the virus and if having preexisting conditions could impact any kind of side effects that could come with the vaccine.

Part 6

In the final segment, the panel explores a viewer question regarding over-the-counter medication and whether or not taking those on the day of vaccination could cause adverse side effects.
