Free and Affordable Pittsburgh for 1/13: Free Martin Luther King Jr. Day Fun!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought a message of hope and healing to America. On this week's Free & Affordable Pittsburgh segment on Pittsburgh Today Live, we're talking about a few of the free activities happening on MLK Jr. Day, including free Science Center admission, activities at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater, a Community Day event at the Union Project, and Family Fun at the Pittsburgh Glass Center! Conservation Day at the Carnegie Science Center

Thanks to Duquesne Light, admission to the Carnegie Science Center is FREE all day on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. They'll be showcasing a day of environmentally themed programming for all ages. In addition to free admission which is usually $17.98 for adults and $11.95 for kids 3-12, visitors will also enjoy a free Omnimax movie and free parking - $8 and $5 for non-members respectively. All four floors of exhibits will be available as well. In addition to all the fun, you can visit Duquesne Light's booth for information on rebate programs, refrigerator/freezer recycling and CFL bulb discounts.

East Liberty Celebrates MLK Jr. Day at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater

The Kelly Strahorn Theater in East Liberty will be holding their annual "Many Hands" event. They'll have loads of family-friendly activities and performances throughout the afternoon. Visitors will enjoy activities from Bike Pittsburgh, CMU's Hear Me Project, and more. At 2pm there will be a free performance by the Alumni Theater Company, Dreams of Hope, Hip Hop on L.O.C.K, Interplay, and Visionary Dance Company. There will be an organized march at 4pm heading up Highland Avenue to the Union Project... which leads us to our next pick!

Head to Union Project for a free, family friendly event celebrating the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. Visitors will be able to work on a Community Mosaic Project - adding their handprints to new tables for the Café Ola Appetit at Union Project using ceramic tiles and stained glass pieces. There will also be storytelling and a book giveaway for kids and their families, dramatic readings including Indira Ghandhi's Letter to Coretta Scott King, and even a free community dinner!

Family Fun on MLK Jr. Day at the Pittsburgh Glass Center

This MLK Jr. Day event at the Pittsburgh Glass Center provides hands-on fun for the entire family. Admission is free, and there will be ongoing live glass blowing and flameworking demonstrations throughout the day - artists will gather, shape and blow amazing works of art right in front of your eyes! You can also see a mixed media installation called "Ten More Years on Penn" illustrating how artistic intervention has changed the Penn Avenue corridor and how it might look in the future! If you choose, you can also make your very own glass bead for $15, or fused tile for $25. Pre-registration is not required for this event - everyone is welcome!
