Former Teacher Removed From Garbage-Filled House

UNIONTOWN (KDKA) -- A retired Uniontown school teacher is being evaluated in the hospital, after Uniontown Police removed her from her home, which was filled with feces, urine and garbage.

Carol McFarland, a retired Frazier School District teacher, lived alone in the Evans Street house, which was still listed in her late mother's name.

Uniontown Police Lt. Tom Kolencik told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti Tuesday night, "I had to back away from the door when I opened it, because of the smell and bugs were flying out."

He added that the trash, clutter and feces were piled up so high "she was laying in it, like a hammock."

Lorrie Stevenson, who lives across the street from McFarland said she would buy food for her neighbor and bring her Thanksgiving dinner.

When asked if she ever got inside, Stevenson said no, she would give her food at the doorway.

Another neighbor would cut McFarland's lawn, but also never went inside her home.

Lt. Kolencik said there was so much garbage in the home, firefighters had to take the hinges off the front door, before he managed to coax her to come outside.

The house has now been boarded up, because it's deemed a safety hazard and has numerous building code violations.
