Former Steelers, Volunteers Team Up To Help Disabled Veteran
McDONALD (KDKA) -- Home is where the heart is, and volunteers showed up by the dozens in Washington County Saturday to lend a hand for a retired, disabled veteran.
The cause even got some attention from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The volunteers were hard at work in McDonald to help out the wounded warrior.
They were helping former Marine rifleman Brian Beckwith. He was injured in Iraq three years ago when an IED blew up his Humvee.
While he survived, 46 Marines and two Navy Corpsman died that day. Since then, life hasn't quite been the same.
"You know, we took it pretty tough," said Beckwith.
Some former Steelers and 84 Lumber teamed up with Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh, a non-profit organization that helps renovate homes for people with disabilities.
They're renovating Beckwith's home to make his life a little better.
"We are doing new windows, we are replacing doors...and his young family easier," said Alan Sisco, of Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh.
For former Steeler Bryan Hinkle, it was the least he could do for someone who put his life on the line for our country.
"It's nice to get out to help people...thats protecting our country," Hinkle said.
For Brian, the helping hands were more than he could have asked for.
"It's taken a lot off of our shoulders," Brian added. "We're grateful and thankful, and it's all getting done in eight hours."
Steeler alums Randy Grossman, Larry Brown and Rich Erenberg also volunteered on the project.
