Former Steelers LB Robin Cole Wants You To Man Up To Prostate Cancer
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan)- Former Steelers LB Robin Cole joined The Fan Morning Show to talk about his days with the Steelers, the state of the current team and to promote awareness for Prostate Cancer including his upcoming Father's Day 5K/10K Run/Walk for the Obediah Cole Foundation for Prostate Cancer.
Cole said he was honored to have played for the best fans in the world here in Pittsburgh. He was a two-time Super Bowl winner with the Steelers.
He thinks that the Steelers will rebound from an 8-8 team a year ago. He also said he thinks that the Steelers are in a building for the future mode.
"It's time to look for new talent," Cole said "Who is going to step up next?"
He said the Steelers did a fantastic job in the draft and with good young players returning, it should not be long until the Steelers are back at a championship level.
Cole works with prostate cancer because he says it hit close to home for him. He watched his father and uncle both die from undiagnosed prostate cancer, and three of Robin's brothers were diagnosed with the disease.
Cole realized his chances of developing cancer were increased, but did not know he already had it until a routine physical revealed a PSA of 3. Although not considered high, he underwent a prostate biopsy. He had cancer.
Getting tested at the right time saved his life. He was 49 years old – the same age his father lost his fight with the disease. He underwent surgery and remains cancer-free. He is a healthy husband, father and grandfather. His mission is to make a difference in men's lives by educating them in the importance of physical exams and PSA testing.
Cole says he has never taken anything for granted.
"When I played I gave it everything I had," Cole said. "I knew any given Sunday it could be over so football was a platform for what I would do next."
He has made that mission to get the word out on this killer disease.
The Obediah Cole Foundation provides information about Prostate Cancer, which affects 230,000 men a year. The foundation is aimed at spreading awareness of and raising funds to fight prostate cancer. Their goal is to alert and screen every man in the Pittsburgh area, particularly the under-served and under-insured populations.
The Man Up for Prostate Cancer Father's Day race will be held Saturday June 16, 2013 at Riverfront Park across from Heinz Field Gate A.
On Site registration begins at 6:30 a.m. (closes at 7:30 a.m.) and the 10K race begins at 8 a.m. The 5K Run/Walk begins at 8:20 a.m. and the Fun Walk where walkers may go any distance will begin at 8:45 a.m.
