Former Steelers Doctor To Stand Trial
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- There are new details about the federal indictment of a former team doctor for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Dr. Richard Rydze is accused of prescribing steroids and other drugs for bogus reasons.
Dr. Rydze has been ordered to stand trial on 185 counts of improperly distributing steroids and other drugs such as Vicodin.
On Monday, a judge released Dr. Rydze on $100,000 unsecured bond. He will be under house arrest, which means he cannot leave his house until he stands trial.
The trial date has not yet been set.
Rydze was a Steelers' physician until 2007, at which time he came under investigation by New York authorities for allegedly purchasing a half million dollars of steroids.
At that time, he was released from the Steelers. He was also fired by UPMC and came under investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office and the FBI out of their Ohio offices.
The Steelers and Dr. Rydze have said in interviews that no Steelers were given steroids.
Earlier this year, the Drug Enforcement Administration revoked Dr. Rydze's license.
At Monday's bond hearing, it was revealed that Dr. Rydze is also accused of continuing to write prescriptions for steroids and other drugs up until October.
There was a request he be released on his own recognizance but that was denied.
