Former Pitt QB Tyler Palko: 'You Have To Learn What It Takes To Win'
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) -- With Pitt taking on Notre Dame this Saturday at 3:30 p.m., a man who knows that rivalry all too well, former Pitt, CFL, UFL, and NFL quarterback Tyler Palko, joined The Fan Morning Show today.
Palko, who led the Panthers to a last-second victory against the Fighting Irish in 2004, opted to move on from football after last season, working for a financial firm less than a year after starting for the Kansas City Chiefs. He admits that life has changed for him.
"I'm out of the football realm. I'm up early, I'm a working man now," Palko said. "There's a little more on my plate now than football."
He and the guys shared a laugh about his slip-up during a television interview after that 2004 Pitt vs. Notre Dame game.
"I try to remind people that it was a correctly-structured English sentence," Palko said of that statement. "[With] the type of person that I am, everyone knows it was a mistake."
Palko credited current Pitt QB Tino Sunseri for fighting through the rough circumstances that have surrounded him during his career.
"Coaching changes are not easy to go through," Palko said. "Tino can't control that, and obviously, they're not putting him in the right position... but you can't use it as an excuse."
Palko also praised first-season head coach Paul Chryst for his leadership.
"He's developing a culture down there where you don't just show up and win," Palko said. "You have to learn what it takes to win."
