Flower Baskets Missing From Andy Warhol Bridge
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Apparently someone was a little too taken with the beauty of the hanging baskets along the Andy Warhol Bridge in downtown Pittsburgh because someone walked away with quite a few of them over the weekend.
Baskets with petunias, geraniums and verbena decorate the three bridges in downtown Pittsburgh, including the Andy Warhol.
They hang eight to 10-feet above the guard rail on light poles along the pedestrian walkway.
The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, which provides the planters, says the agency gets quite a few calls and emails from people saying how they love the flowers.
That love may have gone a little too far. Eight planters are missing. Judy Wagner from the conservancy says during the 10 years the plants have been hung they have had to battle pests and bad weather but never thieves.
"We don't know exactly what happened," Wagner said. "We believe that someone came along and decided to dislodge a number of the hanging baskets."
Taking the planters down is not easy. They hang several feet above the guard rails from light posts and they are secured to the poles, so not only was this bold it was dangerous.
Each planter weighs about 30 pounds and costs $100. The conservancy wants to wait another 24 hours before replacing the eight missing ones in the hopes that someone will return them.
