Flooded Apartment Leaves Ross Twp. Couple Concerned For Their Safety
ROSS TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A Ross Township couple says they were forced to leave their apartment after it was flooded.
The apartment complex's management told them they were working to fix the problem, using tarps to funnel leaking water from the roof into trash cans.
The couple says they've already collected buckets of water inside their house, and now it's a stinky and humid mess.
Amanda Loscar and Dave Rennebeck's Waldorf Park apartment has water dripping from the windows, walls and even electrical outlets.
It started Friday; and according to the two, management has done little to help or keep them informed.
"They walked in and went, 'Oh yeah, that's a lot of water. There's nothing we can do for you, nothing,'" said Rennebeck of when the apartment staff sent two men to assess the damage.
The couple was told someone from Lobos Management would get in touch with them on Monday to help. By Wednesday, with things getting worse and no remedy in sight, the couple called Ross Township Police.
An officer then called the fire department.
Friday, the fire marshal said new citations were sent out to the management company.
For safety reasons, the fire marshal shut the power off to their apartment as well as to another resident who lives above them where the damage is even worse.
Loscar and Rennebeck say within 20 minutes they were told the complex's maintenance electrician deemed things safe, and leaking outlets and all the power went back on.
"They really don't care. For the fire department to turn off the power, and 20 minutes later, management turn it back on, they really have no regard for their residents' safety whatsoever," said Loscar.
The couple says there's no way they can find a new place to live by Friday, which was the deadline they were given to be able to break their lease and get their security deposit back.
They're staying with family hoping Lobos management will be flexible with them.
Lobos management would not go on camera, but said they are "dealing with it."
The fire marshal says he met with the landlord who says the problem stems from ice on the roof and that a roofer called in Thursday can't do anything until it all thaws.
