Flood Waters Take Over Local Communities

UPPER BURRELL (KDKA) -- Friday evening's heavy rainfall resulted in flooding in some local communities.

Westmoreland County 911 says street and basement flooding were the main problems in the Upper Burrell area.

Along Oak Lake Road, Anne Capiross had family and friends helping her clean her basement which had two feet of water in it as a result of a nearby creek overflowing its banks.

She says she can't get flood insurance because of the creek near her home. She's lived there for 40 years and has seen more than her share of flooding.

A few miles away off Millingtown Road, it wasn't just basement flooding causing problems. Chris and Donna Harkins lost a small bridge that leads to their home.

Harkins says she was making dinner, looked up and saw that her yard looked like a river. The creek is normally six inches high, but reached four feet.

Dispatchers said no one was evacuated and no one was hurt.

Meantime in Prosperity, Washington County, Browns Creek flooded a covered bridge. The rushing waters swept away Justin McConnell's pickup truck.

"We're not sure where it's at yet, but I'll find it and get it out," he said.

A local farmer trying to cross the creek lost his horse.

Paul Sanders is worried about his mobile home. He hasn't seen water this high since Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

Also, a landslide is blocking a lane on State Route 18 near Prosperity.
