Flood Warnings & Advisories Remain In Effect
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Flood warnings and advisories remain in effect for parts of our area, but the good news is rain isn't expected to return until Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Warning has been issued for Allegheny, Greene and Washington counties.
The warning will last through 7 p.m. Thursday, but could be extended if conditions warrant.
The good news, sunshine is in the forecast on Thursday.
"Sunshine for everyone [Thursday], temperatures into the low 50s, clouds will return and increase on Friday with rain showers returning by Friday night and into Saturday," said KDKA Chief Meteorologist Jeff Verszyla.
As of 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, the Monongahela River was at 17.4 feet near Elizabeth. Flood stage in that area is 20 feet.
The NWS expects the river to rise to about 20.9 feet this evening. It is expected to fall below the flood stage Thursday afternoon.
As a result, minor flooding is expected in the area.
For reference, some basements in West Elizabeth will begin to flood when the river rises to 22 feet.
A flood advisory is also in effect for the Ohio River in Pittsburgh until Wednesday night.
As of 11 a.m., the river was at 17.3 feet. Flood stage is 25 feet, but the NWS expects the river to rise to about 21.1 feet around midnight.
At 18 feet, water begins to spill over into the Mon Parking Wharf. As a result, that lot has been closed until further notice.
At 21 feet, sewers in Pittsburgh start to backup.
