Dense Fog Could Cause Visibility Issues On Roads Overnight
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – After a day of rain, melting snow and some flooding concerns, dense fog is set to reduce visibility on the roads through the overnight hours.
The National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for much of the area through 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Forecasters say the fog will at times reduce visibility below one quarter of a mile. Drivers are being warned to slow down and leave plenty of distance ahead of you on the roads.
"Dense fog will take center stage after the showers end," KDKA Chief Meteorologist Jeff Verszyla said. "That'll be the case into wake up and commute [Wednesday] morning. Reduced visibilities under a mile at times. Clouds [Wednesday] morning breaking for sunshine [Wednesday] afternoon. Highs will be back near 50 and temperatures will remain mild all week."
Meanwhile, the combination of rain and melting snow has prompted some flooding concerns around the area.
According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Warning has been issued for Allegheny, Greene and Washington counties.
The warning goes into effect Wednesday afternoon and will last until Thursday afternoon.
As of 10:15 a.m., the Monongahela River was at 15.5 feet near Elizabeth. Flood stage in that area is 20 feet.
The NWS expects the river to rise to about 21.9 feet Thursday morning. It is expected to fall below the flood stage late Thursday morning.
At 22 feet, some basements in West Elizabeth will begin to flood.
A flood advisory is also in effect for the Ohio River in Pittsburgh until Wednesday night.
As of 11 a.m., the river was at 16.7 feet. Flood stage is 25 feet, but the NWS expects the river to rise to about 20.5 feet early Thursday morning.
At 21 feet, sewers in Pittsburgh start to backup.
