Aliquippa Hit Hard By Flooding
ALIQUIPPA (KDKA) -- Pittsburgh wasn't the only place hit by flooding.
Well after the rain stopped, Franklin Avenue and Spring Street in Aliquippa remained impassable unless you were in a high-profile vehicle.
"You saw people trying to get to their cars and they just gave up," Brian Jarrell, of Uncommon Grounds Café, said. "We ended up having to call 9-1-1 and ask that they close down the street because we were worried about cars getting stuck. It was that bad."
One of the big problems was that the storm drain system couldn't handle the water flow – something residents were hoping would have been fixed several years ago.
"We went through it down here in '07 when we got that hurricane Hugo, and this was nothing compared to that, but it's still disheartening to see it keep happening over and over again," Mike Beers, a business owner, said.
Several church group volunteers showed up to try to help clean up, but the task was daunting.
Some businesses say it will probably be at least Tuesday before they're open again.
Because this has happened before, Aliquippa has a volunteer system in place. If you can help clean up or need help with it, The Uncommon Grounds Café is coordinating that effort.
