Fitzgerald: We May Have Dodged A Bullet
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - At the height of the storm, the Allegheny County Emergency Operations Center took about 400 calls about downed wires, flooded basements and water on roadways.
At a briefing Tuesday morning, Allegheny County officials said it appears our area may have dodged a bullet.
The Mon Wharf is closed today as the water continues to creep up.
Late Tuesday morning, docks in the McKees Point area were ravaged and broken loose by Sandy.
"Our boat docks are breaking loose and I am on B dock, which is gone, A dock, which is gone," boat owner Bob Deluca said. "And these two docks, if they break loose, they're going to take out the rest of the boats that are here."
However, officials said things turned out better, especially in Allegheny County, because the storm turned north before it reached western Pennsylvania.
"It looks like Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and western Pennsylvania may have dodged a bullet. As of now, we see very little in the way of flooding. We've had a few power outages from some downed trees and some limbs, but for the most part it's much better than we anticipated, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said. "It appears that the storm, which obviously hit the coast yesterday and was heading west toward us, started to take a northern path once it hit the middle of the state."
Here is the latest power outage information as of noon:
- Duquesne Light – 350 customers
- West Penn Power - 2,000 customers mostly in North Fayette, Upper St. Clair and Findlay Township
Officials will continue to monitor the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers as the storm continues to move out of the area.
