Fire Destroys One Home, Damages Two Others In Indiana

INDIANA (KDKA)- A big fire engulfed one house and damaged two others in Indiana early Monday morning.

The fire started around 1 a.m. in the 600 block of Locust Street, just a few blocks away from the IUP campus.

When crews arrived, one of the houses was fully engulfed in flames. Eventually, part of the house collapsed.

The fire destroyed the home at 634 Locust Street. Homes on either side of it were damaged. The home at 636 Locust Street has fire damage in the attic and roof. The home at 630 Locust St. has melted siding as a result of the fire next door.

"The middle house was on fire," said Marie Stefanik. "And then not too long after that, the flames went over to the other house and started it on fire."

Stefanik said she was watching a Christmas movie when she saw the flames.

"I came to the door and looked out, and holy cow, the whole house was engulfed in flames," said Stefanik. "There was red flames all over, so, it was bad."

No one was injured in the fire. One student who attends Indiana University of Pennsylvania was displaced, and has received temporary housing.

Indiana Fire Association Asst. Fire Chief Tom Moreau said the homes are used for student housing and are divided into apartments.

Five students lived in the middle home. Fortunately, most of the students are home for the holiday break.

The state fire marshal's office has been notified of the fire. They will be investigating the fire to determine the cause of the fire.
