Fire Causes Major Damage To 4 Homes In Armstrong Co.
FREEPORT (KDKA) - An overnight fire destroyed two homes and damaged two others in Armstrong County.
The blaze broke out around 1:40 a.m. at Market Street in Freeport.
Officials say that two of the homes are a complete loss, while another had roof damage and a fourth had some water damage.
Authorities say the home where the fire initially broke out was vacant. Two others were occupied, including the one next door, which was also engulfed in flames.
"At first, I thought my house was on fire. They were putting water on it and just couldn't control it. It just kept burning and burning. We were really afraid we might lose more houses," said Fr. Edward Volz, of St. Mary's Parish in Freeport. "Four years ago, the house was on fire and the owner was working on that house. I've been watching him – he's rebuilding the house and he would be working all by himself. He just moved the dumpster out and he looked like he was getting to the point where he could rent it again."
The families were able to get out safely. Officials say seven people were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is now helping those people.
The State Police Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
