South Shore Riverfront Park Nears Completion
SOUTH SIDE (KDKA) - Pittsburgh's South Side is one of the city's most popular neighborhoods, not only for partying, but living, dining and shopping as well.
Final touches are currently being made on the city's newest riverfront park at the South Side Works.
Chief of Operations for Riverlife, Edward Patten, is one of the partners in the venture. On Tuesday, he gave KDKA's Brenda Waters a tour.
"You are looking at sort of an interesting looking set of steel and poles and that is going to support a tent structure and will be a stage area for event venues. [It's] anticipated to be covered in the next few weeks," Patten said.
The park is at the site of the old South Side Works Steel Mill. In its prime, there were more than 8,500 people working there.
It was demolished in the early 1990s and is now the home of South Shore Riverfront Park.
Some of the history of the mill was included in the planning.
"It is unusual to have these kind of ingots lying around. Perhaps someone perished in an accident at the mill and may have been cast in one of these ingots," Patten said.
In addition, the South Side Works Bike Trail will connect to the new park.
It's hard to visualize the finished project at this point, but by Memorial Day, most of the park will be finished.
