Fighting The Pressures Of Motherhood
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) -- The challenges of motherhood can sometimes affect one parent more than the other.
Some of the struggles mothers go through can lead to postpartum depression, child abuse and, in severe cases, the death of a child.
KDKA's Chris Moore spoke to Author of "When Mothers Cry" Nicholl McGuire, to discuss why some mothers experience unbearable pressures of motherhood and how to overcome them.
In her book McGuire says, "Not every women is ready to be a mother." She relates to this from her own personal experience.
"I was 24 when I had my first baby and I wasn't ready," said McGuire.
Her reason behind writing the book had a lot to do with Andrea Yates, a former Texas resident who confessed to drowning her five children in a bathtub.
"I was pregnant and when I heard the story of Andrea Yates, I couldn't believe it. And I wanted to write about mothers who go through postpartum depression and other things," said Mcguire.
Friends and relatives of parents who show unusual behavior towards their children should intervene and seek help, she says. Mothers and fathers both can display this type of behavior.
"As long as people are paying attention to irregularities in parents, they can save a child's life," said McGuire.
McGuire has created a blog to support overwhelmed mothers with several resources to help their situation. The blog can be found at www.whenmotherscry.blogspot.com.
