Federal Judge Dismisses Appeal For Preservation Of Civic Arena
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) – The Civic Arena is running out of lives as efforts to preserve the former home of the Pittsburgh Penguins took another hit on Friday.
According to an Associated Press report, U.S. District Judge David Cercone dismissed an appeal by preservationists.
In a 17-page ruling, Judge Cercone said the federal court has no legal jurisdiction in the case.
Preservation Pittsburgh is attempting to save the 50-year-old arena in order to reuse it.
The group said the project required federal funds so the case could be heard in federal court. However, the judge said the city-county Sports & Exhibition Authority that owns the stadium has not applied for such funding.
Both the SEA and the Penguins want to tear the Civic Arena down in order to redevelop the land.
The Penguins are gearing up to open their second season at Consol Energy Center in the coming weeks.
