FBI Agents Head Back To Ohio To Investigate Rochester Girl's Murder
ROCHESTER (KDKA) -- FBI agents from Pittsburgh and Cleveland searched the woods in Portage County, Ohio, Friday, hoping new technology will help them with two cold cases.
The agents hope to figure out who killed 14-year-old Sarah Boehm of Rochester, Beaver County, and 17-year-old Kathryn Menendez from Ohio, whose bodies were found in the same general area back in 1994.
DNA and other technologies have changed since then, and investigators hope to unearth new leads.
"Sarah often wore large hoop earrings," said FBI agent Greg Nelsen. "Those earrings were never recovered. Is there a chance it could be here? We hope so. Also, there could be some DNA evidence just by dealing with different searches, something additional could be recovered that could lead us to a new suspect or pinpoint a suspect."
There were many theories about what happened to her once she left her home on Mellon Avenue in Rochester late one July night more than 20 years ago.
In the year 2000, many were convinced she was one of the people depicted in surveillance video at a local bar. And investigators released the video hoping it would help.
Turns out, she was dead long before that video was taken.
Investigators eventually determined hers was one of the bodies found in Portage County, Ohio just a few months after she disappeared.
It wasn't until 2003 that tests confirmed her identity.
The Beaver County Times online Cold Case series highlighted evidence found over the years.
