Lightning Hits Church Steeple In Fayette Co., Causes Damage
REDSTONE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Lightning hit and destroyed a church steeple in Fayette County Friday afternoon.
St. Cecelia Roman Catholic Church will still have masses, according to the church business manager, Shannon Sealy.
Sealy was inside the church when the bolt struck.
"We heard this huge crash and power went off in the rectory, and we just kind of said that had to hit something!" said Sealy.
It wasn't until she was driving away that she noticed the damage, "I happened to look in my rear view mirror on the car, and I said, 'Oh my heavens!'"
It's believed heavy rain kept the fire from spreading to the rest of the church.
In Butler County, numerous and widespread power outages were reported after the storm.
And in Beaver County, there were reports of trees down in New Sewickley, Potter Township and Industry.
Before the Riverhounds game at the new Highmark Stadium along the Monongahela River, fans that were in the stands were told to go to their cars for a time until the threat of lightning passed.
And in Squirrel Hill, an event showing off some of the cars in this weekend's Vintage Grand Prix went on as scheduled despite some rain. A few of the cars were sheltered with umbrellas.
