Woman Struck, Killed By Tractor Trailer Outside Giant Eagle
CRAFTON, Pa. (KDKA) - An 81-year-old woman is dead after she got pinned beneath the rear wheels of a tractor trailer outside a Giant Eagle in Crafton.
Dispatchers confirmed a vehicle accident outside the Giant Eagle at the Crafton Ingram Shopping Center.
It was a tragic scene at the shopping center as police set up tape around the tractor trailer parked around the side of the building.
Homicide detectives and collision reconstruction officers are initiating the investigation, Allegheny County Police say.
Police report first responders found the victim, who they say is an 81-year-old woman, dead at the scene. The medical examiner has identified her as Florence Hall of Pittsburgh.
Investigators determined the woman had been shopping at Giant Eagle and was walking to her car when a tractor trailer making a delivery to the Advanced Auto Parts store nearby backed into the lot.
The truck driver told police he knew he hit something but had no idea it was a person until he stopped and got out of his vehicle.
Witnesses told police they heard the backup warning sound from the truck.
This happened just around 11 a.m. and those going about their business shocked to learn what happened.
Katelyn Craig, a hair stylist working in the salon across the street watched the scene unfold from their window: "It's a busy window, we get to see a lot but this is not necessarily what you want to see."
Police are investigating. The medical examiner has not released the victim's name yet.
