One Killed, One In Serious Condition After Fight Leads To Shots Fired Outside Bar
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Pittsburgh Police are investigating a fight that led to shots fired and two people shot outside of Craig's Bar on Chartiers Avenue.
Police were initially called to the scene for reports of a fight just before 2 a.m. While they were traveling to the scene, they were informed that shots had been fired.
When police arrived, they found two men with gunshot wounds. A man was pronounced dead at the scene and another was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
"We heard gunshots, which is becoming real familiar. Every other week it seems like," said Joe Sarubbi, a Sheraden resident.
Sarubbi has lived in the neighborhood since 1968. For years, he says he didn't have to think twice about walking down the street. But now, he's had to watch his back.
"It's getting crazy," he said. "I had bullets going through windows in the neighborhood. You got kids around too, so it's dangerous."
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner has identified the man killed as 42-year-old Jamorr Mathis of Pittsburgh.
"I heard sirens real quick. I walked down, was standing right over there and seen the dead man right there," said Sarubbi.
Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesperson Cara Cruz says this is the third fatal shooting in the city this month, and there have been 30 murders so far this year. All but two were gun-related.
"I'm hearing that it's just conflictions between different neighborhoods," said Sarubbi. "You get conflict and a couple of bars, you got people drinking and you got a gun. It's just an equation for a bad situation."
Sarubbi says people need to stop resolving their issues with guns. He says when he grew up, arguments didn't lead to shootings.
"The next day you shook hands; it was over and done with. You laughed about it or maybe you didn't talk to the guy anymore. It didn't matter, but you're still going home to your family," said Sarubbi.
Pittsburgh Police's Major Crimes Unit is investigating.
