Fatal Cop Shooting Suspect Killed In Standoff
WEBSTER (KDKA) - The suspect in a shooting that left one officer dead and another injured has died.
According to police, the suspect was shot and killed during a standoff at his home Monday morning.
He has been identified as Eli Franklin Myers, 58, of Webster, Westmoreland County.
Allegheny County SWAT and members of the Westmoreland County law enforcement community surrounded Myers' home Monday morning.
According to State Police, Myers came out of his home around 10 a.m. and engaged the State Police SERT term with a weapon. At that time, SERT team members shot and fatally wounded Myers, which ended the standoff.
On Sunday, two East Washington police officers were shot during a traffic stop along Route 70 around 10:30 p.m.
According to police, Officer John David Dryer was taken to Washington Hospital where he later died.
Officer Robert Caldwell sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound and was taken to Allegheny General Hospital.
A woman in the community said her husband was a part-time West Newton police officer along with Myers back in the mid-80s.
"Eli never bothered anybody. I don't know what happened to him to set him off like that," Diane Shepler said.
The Allegheny County Bomb Squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearm agents went through his home Monday morning.
Myers used to work at a gun shop and was a hunting enthusiast who had many weapons in his possession.
All of the weapons will be processed for evidence.
