Fans Pack North Shore For U2 Concert
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- They started two years ago in Spain and have been all over the world since then. Now, legendary rockers U2 are bringing their tour to Pittsburgh tonight.
This is the last stop in the United States, and next to last stop for the entire tour.
Thousands of fans are gearing up for the concert at Heinz Field. In fact, some of them have been on the North Shore all day. The gates to the stadium opened at 5 p.m.
The lines of traffic formed early even though the parking lots didn't open until 2 p.m. The heaviest traffic converged on the North Shore between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m.
Then, the tailgating got underway.
"We got here about 10:30 this morning," said one concert-goer. "We got first in line; we queued up, we packed up a picnic, games, umbrellas, chairs - you name it, we got it going."
When the stage is finally set and the lights go up on this stop, the U2 tour promises to be a lasting memory - not just for fans but the city as well.
"We started out this year, Jan. 1 with the Winter Classic," said Jimmy Sacco, the manager of Heinz Field. "We've gone into sold out Taylor Swift, sold out Kenny Chesney, now to host U2 on the final tour show in the U.S. and we're near capacity here."
Officials say they expect 60,000 people to pack Heinz Field for the concert.
