Family Members May Face Charges For Helping Stabbing Suspect Flee
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Jerrell Whitlock is now in a Florida jail after he was arrested at a motel in Gainesville Friday.
Whitlock, 26, is the third and final suspect facing charges in the attempted carjacking and stabbing of Pittsburgh Steeler Mike Adams on Pittsburgh's South Side earlier this month.
Police said they had to use a stun gun as Whitlock tried to flee U.S. Marshals who came to his second-floor motel room. It's where he and his 25-year-old girlfriend, Precious Gethers, had been staying along with their 3-month-old boy.
Neither Gethers nor the child was hurt in the capture of Whitlock.
There's no word on when he will be extradited back to Pennsylvania to face charges including attempted homicide, carjacking and robbery.
Police say Whitlock was one of three Hazelwood men who tried to carjack Adams in the early morning hours of June 1.
Investigators say it was Whitlock who allegedly twice stabbed the offensive lineman, once in the abdomen and once on the arm. Adams continues to recover from his wounds.
Lt. Jack Kearney, of the Allegheny County Sheriff's Department, said at a news conference: "Whitlock had made numerous statements to police and family members that he wasn't going to jail. He would have a shootout with police, and he would not return to Allegheny County."
Kearney said Whitlock's relatives may now face charges for helping him leave Pittsburgh after the Adams' stabbing.
He first went to the Cleveland area, and then took a bus to Florida with Gethers and their little boy.
Gethers faces charges of hindering apprehension and endangering the welfare of a child.
