Fallen SEAL 3rd Serviceman Killed In Action Since '07 With Norwin Ties
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Navy SEAL Nicholas Checque, 28, who was killed over the weekend while taking part in the rescue of a hostage in Afghanistan, was the third serviceman who graduated from Norwin High School to die from enemy fire in either Iraq of Afghanistan, since 2007.
Checque graduated from the school in 2002 and was a member of the Norwin High School wrestling team.
Just two months ago, Norwin-graduate Christopher Raible was killed when his camp in Afghanistan was attacked by Taliban insurgents , who were dressed in United States Army uniforms.
Raible was 40-years-old, and was a Marine Corps Lt. Col. He graduated near the top of his class and played on the school's football team.
Five years ago, in November of 2007, Air Force Staff Sgt. David Wieger of North Huntingdon, was killed in action when his vehicle struck an IED in Iraq.
Don Kattic, the commander of VFW Post 781 in Irwin, told KDKA TV that, "they were all wonderful boys. I don't understand why everything is happening to Norwin kids."
Kattic said he'd been in touch with the Norwin School District Superintendent, about building a memorial to all the former Norwin students killed in wars.
