Fallen Marine Honored With Memorial 5K In Emsworth

EMSWORTH (KDKA) -- The family of a Marine from Emsworth, who was killed in Iraq, is establishing a 5K run and walk in his memory.

The proceeds are going to help wounded Marines and their families.

A monument bearing the proud image of Lance Corporal Patrick B. Kenny surveys the field in Emsworth where he once played youth football, a field that was dedicated in his name.

Katy Kenny's older brother lost his life in Iraq, seven years ago.

"When someone was down," she recalls, "he would just go ahead and just start singing. He never wanted to see anyone with a frown on his face."

Katy recalls that her brother played on the football field every Thanksgiving morning, in the annual Turkey Bowl game. And even in that small endeavor, she says his dedication shown through.

"During school, while he's supposed to be listening to the teacher, he would be running plays or making plays happen," she said. "And everyone would be like, 'Pat, come on, it's not that serious.' And he's like, 'Oh, it is.'"

The "Lance Corporal Patrick B. Kenny Memorial Run" will pass through Emsworth in early June. Runners will turn down Center Street, past the home of Patrick's parents, the house where he and three sisters grew up.

"He just made sure Maggie, Molly and I were always taken care of," Katy says. "And he just kept that going with his friends and family."

Katy followed in her brother's footsteps.

"When he enlisted in the Marine Corps., I said 'Well, that's what I'm doing,'" she said. "And so I did."

Crushed by her loss, Patrick Kenny's sister and fellow Marine, will keep his name alive.
