Eye-Catching Display Raises Breast Cancer Awareness On North Shore
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It's a sight you certainly don't see every day, thousands of bras lining a walking path on the North Shore. It's an eye-catching display, but why are they there?
They are all shapes, sizes and colors. But the message behind all of them bras is the same, breast cancer awareness.
"I think just about every person out here can tell you of a sister, an aunt, a mother that has been affected by breast cancer, so our hearts are in this project," said Tricia Brazeau, a Rivers Casino employee.
Dozens of Rivers Casino employees, all dressed in pink, helped string and hang up the more than 10,000 bras.
One of the volunteers, Colleen Kennedy, is a breast cancer survivor. She's been in remission for five years.
"Battling breast cancer is probably the hardest thing you'll ever do in your life, and I'm just grateful I have every day to live," Kennedy said.
She hopes people notice the displays along the River Walk behind the casino and on the fence in front of Rivers Casino.
"I want everyone to just be aware that, if you are not affected, there are so many other people that are," she said.
The bras aren't just to grab attention; there is another reason behind the effort.
For each bra collected by casino employees and guests, Rivers will donate $1 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Pittsburgh. That's $10,000 that will go to local women and research.
Throughout the entire month of October, the casino will be offering promotions to raise awareness and funds.
"All of the bras will be there for about a week, and then they will be taken down and donated to the Salvation Army and local women's shelters.
