Extra Cleaning Crews Brought In As Possible Norovirus Spreads At Pitt-Johnstown
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (KDKA) -- University of Pittsburgh Johnstown officials have cancelled all indoor campus social events for the weekend as they believe a norovirus may be spreading among students.
According to university officials, several students have reported having gastrointestinal illness symptoms, including fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal discomfort.
The university is working with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and in addition to the cancelled social events, the school has also suspended cafeteria services at all campus dining facilities.
Prepackaged meals are available instead in the Student Union, according to information provided by the university.
School officials say they've also shut down the Wellness Center, extended the weekend hours for the Office of Health and Counseling and brought in additional crews to clean and sanitize the campus.
The school also offered these preventive steps to stop the spread of the illness:
- Frequent hand washing, especially after toilet visits and before eating or preparing food.
- Thorough cleaning and disinfecting of contaminated surfaces immediately after an episode of illness.
- Immediate removal and washing of clothing or linens that may be contaminated with virus after an episode of illness (use hot water and soap).
- Flushing or discarding any vomitus and/or stool in the toilet and make sure that the surrounding area is kept clean.
