Ex-Ohio State Assistant Gets Jail Time For Violating Order
DELAWARE, Ohio (AP) — Former Ohio State University assistant football coach Zach Smith has been sentenced to jail for violating a civil protection order involving his ex-wife.
A Municipal Court judge in the Columbus suburb of Delaware sentenced Smith, 35, on Friday to 180 days in jail, suspended 160 days, and gave him one day's credit for time served. He also must pay a $750 fine and receive anger management counseling.
Smith was found guilty in December. Authorities said Smith became confrontational with staff when he tried to pick up his children at a Powell elementary school in May while his ex-wife, Courtney Smith, was present.
A message seeking comment was left Saturday with Smith's attorney.
Smith was fired as wide receivers coach in July 2018 by then-head coach Urban Meyer after Smith was charged with criminal trespass in a dispute with Courtney Smith.
Meyer was suspended for the first three games of the 2018 season after a university investigation concluded he had mismanaged problems resulting from Smith's behavior, including allegations of domestic abuse. Meyer retired at the end of the 2018 season.
