Elderly Funeral Home Director To Go To Trial Over Shooting Death
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The judge ruled today that the case of an elderly funeral home director fatally shooting another man will go to trial.
July 26, at 1 p.m., William Welsh's live changed forever.
As he was being escorted to the Allegheny County Jail by police, the 89-year-old former funeral home director admitted he shot 58-year-old William Menni.
Welsh's family was in city court for support and his attorney, Frank Walker, plans to argue self-defense when this goes to trial.
"Mr. Menni was the aggressor," he said. "He came, approached him over and over again. He approached him, he approached Mr. Welsh. It was argument, he pushed him and as a result, he used a firearm in defense of Mr. Menni pushing him."
That argument happened in the parking lot of the Welsh Funeral Home in Homestead over a building that was to be torn down.
Walker says his client had been hired by the owner to tear it down. Welsh gave the job to Menni who reportedly insisted on being paid in full up-front and continued to pressure Welsh about the money.
Finally things boiled over. Welsh allegedly shot Menni in the head.
He died at UPMC Mercy.
"He is frail, this is a surprise to him," Walker said. "I think it is finally sinking in, what's going on and how the process is moving. He is definitely remorseful."
Welsh has been in jail since the shooting.
His attorney's focus is now to get him out on bail.
