Pittsburgh-Area Agricultural Business Taking Feed, Supplies To Texas

EIGHTY FOUR, Pa. (KDKA) -- A Pittsburgh-area agricultural business is sending feed and supplies to Texas.
While most of the attention from Harvey has been focused on Houston, cowboys have been rescuing hundreds of stranded horses and cattle on rural ranches outside of the city.
People here in our area also want to help those animals. At the Agway in Eighty Four, Pa., donations are piling up.
"I think we got about 6,000 pounds, between horse feed and cattle feed, going down," Bob Hutton with SydMor Stables said. "And we have, I would say, just in other supplies, we're probably looking at 6,000 to 10,000 pounds of other supplies. That's medical supplies, toiletries, clothes, just anything we could possibly gather and donate."
Volunteers are ready with trailers and RVs waiting.
"We will be pulling out of here sometime around midnight tonight with a convoy of people going down," Hutton said.
The team of people plans to make the 20- to 25-hour drive straight through with multiple drivers.
"Years after year, there's constantly a need somewhere," Becky Yohe of Monongahela said, "and next year, it could be us."
Many of them have made this trip before, helping hurricane victims in previous years, and even the littlest volunteers are pitching in and doing their part.
"It really humbles you," Shannon Guarino Geiser, a New Orleans native, said, "and my kids went and worked the whole time."
They say they'll focus on the outlying areas, trying to rescue and feed horses and cattle.
"We are going to hang back a little bit in the outlying areas to make sure those people get the attention, not just in the major cities," Hutton said.
Donations are being accepted through Saturday. Supplies donations will be accepted in person at 1025 Route 519.
"Agway has given us an opportunity to make this a drop zone," Hutton said. "People can call in with their credit card and say, 'I'd like to buy 10 bags of feed,' either horse feed or cow feed, and put it on their credit card. And then we will load it in the trailers and take it down."
