EF1-Twister Touched Down In Mercer, According To NWS
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh confirmed that an EF1-Tornado touched down Tuesday in Mercer County.
The people who experienced it say it was over as quickly as it began. No deaths or serious injuries were reported, but it left many without power, and there was property damage, caused mostly by falling branches and a large number of uprooted trees.
"The tree was old and it collapsed in a tornado or something on my dad's truck," Jackson Center resident Jonathan Norris said. "He just had it fixed last night."
Wednesday, the National Weather Service confirmed that the twister did indeed touch down in Hoagland, which is west of Mercer Borough and north of Interstate 80.
The storm headed for Jackson Center, where straight-line winds created quite a mess.
"I got a tornado warning on my cell phone, it was about 3:30 p.m.," homeowner John Egger said. "There was a warning, it said to take cover. About five minutes later, I heard a noise outside, it looked like the trees were sideways, and I watched this big one fall down."
"I was outside because I'm kind of a weather watcher," homeowner George Hooker said, "and the clouds were starting to swirl, and I felt the air starting to suck up."
No sooner than the storm blew through, some home owners didn't waste any time before starting the task of cleaning up the mess. As residents surveyed the damage, some found the scene difficult to describe.
"The awesomeness of what could pick something up and set it down like that," resident Cheryl Carlson, whose garage was damaged by the storm, said. "It's really awesome, that powerful, but it's alright… God will take care of it, it'll be OK."
