Runaway Construction Vehicle Crash On Parkway North Leaves 1 Hurt
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- An accident involving a runaway construction vehicle left one person injured and shut down part of the busy Parkway North in Ohio Township for a time Wednesday afternoon.
The crash happened after 2 p.m. at Camp Horne Road.
Authorities had to close down the southbound side of the road due to the rollover crash. However, it was reopened just before 4 p.m.
The truck was being used at a construction site above the highway when it rolled down the hillside and crashed near the road. It traveled down a significant distance.
"This vehicle was hauling gravel down to a lower portion of the construction site," said Chief Norbert Micklos, of the Ohio Township Police Department.
Police say the huge earth-moving vehicle went airborne briefly after a nearly quarter mile skid down the steep hillside. It happened on the edge of the Cobblestone Development, a single-family, residential housing plan construction site.
Workers tell us the earth mover had been up and down the steep grade two or three times before going wildly out of control.
"At some point it lost control; we're not sure what caused that," Chief Micklos said. "It came through the construction site, down onto the interstate, turned over and crashed. The individual was taken from the construction vehicle to the hospital in serious condition."
Chief Micklos says one person was taken out of the construction vehicle after the crash and taken to the hospital in serious condition.
Mechanical failure is one thing under investigation.
State police were also called to the scene.
So far, OSHA hasn't launched an official investigation into the accident, but they are looking into it.
