Drivers Frustrated As Construction Projects Clog Major Roadways
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Some drivers in the Pittsburgh area are finding themselves very frustrated while construction projects have them locked in traffic.
This past weekend, the outbound Liberty Tubes were closed for repainting and will remain closed for 16 days.
Drivers found themselves stuck in traffic Monday as they waited to take the one-lane detour up McArdle Roadway.
The Ft. Pitt Bridge and Tunnel was also backed up as another alternative route.
The Parkway East and Fort Duquesne Bridge were also backed up as a result. However, those routes can be quite congested even on a normal day.
PennDOT says it's watching to see how the construction project is affecting traffic flow.
"Infrastructure since the '50s, two lanes in and out, Cleveland has a better infrastructure," said one annoyed driver.
In addition to the Liberty Tunnel closure, construction projects on Route 51 and 88 also caused some traffic headaches, ear the jug handle.
"This is a total disaster, since they fixed it, it's worse than before," said one driver.
As traffic from 88 spilled onto Route 51 drivers said a short traffic light meant they were waiting in the same spot for as long as 15 minutes.
We observed no more than four to six cars able to make it through the light at a time.
PennDOT says it will also check the timing of the lights and hopefully help the flow of traffic.
