Dozens Arrested In Allegheny County Drug Sweep

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Dozens of people were taken into custody Monday morning as a major drug sweep continues.

Allegheny County Police, sheriff's deputies and officers from various communities ended an eight-month investigation by arresting dozens of people for the alleged sale and distribution of drugs.

One by one, the suspects were arrested and brought to a staging area in Coraopolis.

Police said for months the suspects have been selling heroin, crack cocaine, and pills on the streets.

"These are all street dealers, the local dealers. The ones that are out on the street selling to people out on the street," Allegheny County Police Lt. Jeff Korczyk said. "The people will notice, I think, a difference here."

Police also confiscated an illegally purchased handgun and an assault weapon.

Undercover officers began buying from the suspects in January. Since then, the drugs were sent to the lab and analyzed. As a result, mostly high-quality narcotics have been taken off the streets in a number of communities.

Police said they also have warrants for seven suspects in neighboring counties. At least 73 of the 85 suspects are now in custody and police expect to make more arrests Monday.
