Donors Help Munhall Softball Association Recoup Losses From Theft
MUNHALL (KDKA) - A local softball association thought all was lost when someone broke into their concession stand and stole hundreds of dollars.
However, thanks to the generosity of strangers they have now doubled their funds.
Earlier this month, someone broke into the concession stand at Woodhill Field and stole a safe with roughly $800 inside.
Since KDKA-TV first reported the story last week, there's been an outpouring of generosity. In fact, they've recouped double the amount that was stolen.
"It's, it's, I have no words for it," Munhall Girls Softball Association President Phillip Thomas said, "Some of the parents even said, 'See there are good people out there,' and were very appreciative."
Tara Simmons with the Women and Girls Foundation in Pittsburgh said their organization, made up of dozens of high school girls, donated eight hundred dollars to the Munhall Softball Association.
"Our girls learn about philanthropy and they had $10,000 dollars to award to other girls programs. And as part of that, they set aside $2,500 for girls sports teams sponsorships. So, when this came up, it seemed like a natural fit," Simmons said.
Munhall Girls Softball Association President Phillip Thomas said another donor, wanted to remain anonymous, but also contributed $800.
The donor, declined an interview, but passed along a message.
"He said tell them I don't want to be identified, I don't want no publicity, I didn't do it for that," Thomas said. "Just tell them a man named Ed donated the money and quote unquote, he said 'that's what Pittsburghers do.'"
As for who stole the money, that is still under investigation by Munhall Police.
