Division Rival Cardinals Acquire OF Heyward From Braves
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - On the same day that the Pirates lose catcher Russell Martin to the Blue Jays (read about that here), the St. Louis Cardinals completed a trade with the Atlanta Braves that netted them an All-Star outfielder.
The Cardinals acquired outfielder Jason Heyward and reliever Jordan Walden from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for starting pitcher Shelby Miller and minor league pitcher Tyrell Jenkins.
Heyward is in the final year of his contract after signing a two-year extension in February and is coming off a disappointing season in which he hit .271 with 11 home runs, 26 doubles and 58 RBI in 149 games.
The 24-year-old Miller is also coming off a disappointing season in which he went 10-9 with a 3.74 ERA.
The upside to this trade for the Braves is that they are getting much more club control over the players they acquired, as Miller is still under team control for four years and Walden is under control for six years.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals only have Heyward for this upcoming season and Walden has two more years of club control.
