Deplorable Conditions Found In Castle Shannon Home
CASTLE SHANNON (KDKA) -- Police in Castle Shannon say the man who was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead inside of a home in Castle Shannon Tuesday night suffered from numerous health issues.
Officers were called to the home in the 3200-block of McRoberts Road around 6:45 p.m. Investigators say deplorable conditions were found inside along with high levels of natural gas in the basement.
According to Castle Shannon police, when officers arrived they found the 33-year-old man unconscious and his roommate trying to revive him by performing CPR in an upstairs bedroom.
The man was pronounced dead by paramedics after 7 p.m. Police say he had "numerous health issues and was taking many medications."
Police say the man's roommate reported seeing him "alert and conscious" about an hour before.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office was also called to the scene to investigate. According to police, "initial indications were that there was no evidence of foul play."
Authorities say a neighbor who is a volunteer firefighter noticed a suspicious odor in the home. Castle Shannon firefighters were called in and found the high levels of natural gas in the basement area.
The home was evacuated, Columbia Gas crews shut off service and the home was ventilated. The source of the leak has not yet been determined.
Police say "it is unknown, but not suspected" that the natural gas levels played a part in the man's death. The roommate did not become sick as a result of the situation.
Also, the Allegheny County Health Department and the Castle Shannon Codes Official were called in to examine the unsanitary conditions inside the home.
