Defense Seeks To Delay School Stabbings Trial
GREENSBURG (KDKA/AP) - The defense attorney for a 16-year-old boy charged in a mass stabbing at a Pennsylvania high school has asked a judge to postpone his trial at least 90 days.
The defense attorney for Alex Hribal, of Murrysville, has said he plans to ask a Westmoreland County judge to move the case to juvenile court. In a motion filed Wednesday, defense attorney Patrick Thomassey asked the judge to delay the Oct. 6 trial so he could file motions in the case.
Hribal is charged with stabbing 20 fellow students and a security guard at Franklin Regional High School. Four students were critically injured, but all have recovered.
Investigators also want access to Alex Hribal's family's cell phone records.
Authorities think Hribal may have used one of the family's cell phones to make threatening phone calls the night before the stabbing rampage. Two students say they received menacing phone calls the night before the stabbings; one of them said they thought it was Hribal calling.
Investigators have already seized Hribal's cell phone, which was inside his backpack in his locker the day of the incident.
Hribal is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and possessing a weapon at school.
Hribal faces decades in prison if he's convicted as an adult in the April 9 attack. In juvenile court, he could be incarcerated only until he's 21.
