Deer Cam Catches Burglar At Fayette Co. Home
FAYETTE COUNTY (KDKA) – It's probably one of the most inexpensive security cameras you can buy, but mostly it's used for hunting, but State Police say in once instance, it may just help catch a thief.
They're called game cameras, motion-activated digital cameras. When put in the woods, they capture images of deer, turkey and other animals. But a deer camera attached to a recently burglarized home in Fayette County caught the image of an apparent thief in action.
"They attached it to the front porch of the residence," State Police Tpr. Stephanie Plume said. "When the actor was going in and out of the residence, it activated."
"It basically captured the actor going into the residence, then again when he came back out when it activated again," she added. "It had him carrying some items, it got a pretty decent shot of his face. We're able to see on the camera he has some tattoos on his face, on his neck."
The break-ins happened at his home in Connellsville Township. When KDKA visited the home, the deer cams appears to have been removed. And security footage isn't uncommon to law enforcement, however a deer cam is a different story.
"It doesn't happen very often," Plume said. "A lot of time folks will have security cams, but in this case it was convenient motion activated so they decided to use it."
Deer cams – or stealth cams as they are also called – run as low as $40 and hold 1,000 images; a cheap alternative to large video security systems.
"You can buy one at your local store," Plume said. "Without service connected to it and get those photos."
There have been other burglaries in the area, but troopers aren't sure if they're related. Anyone with information is asked to call state police.
