Deadline To Claim Money From IRS Fast Approaching
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - With less than a week to go, many procrastinators will be scrambling to finish up their taxes to make sure they get them in by the April 15 deadline.
IRS spokesperson Jennifer Jenkins joined KDKA Radio's Larry Richert and John Shumway to explain what you can do to get your money back faster.
If you have filed your taxes already, how long do you have to wait for your return? Jenkins says it takes about 21 days. She stresses that it is "key" that they are, "complete and accurate," so you get your money back quickly.
If you filed your taxes online and didn't complete all the forms, Jenkins says you will get a bounce back telling you that something is wrong and needs to be fixed. If you file on paper and it isn't' complete and accurate Jenkins says, "it can add a considerable amount of time onto the whole process."
The IRS has $31 million for almost 40,000 Pennsylvania residents who have not filed a 2010 return and the window to claim that money is closing because of a "three-year statute of limitation." Most of money belongs to part-timers, students, and those with minimum wage jobs who paid into the system.
"They may not be required to file a tax return," Jenkins says.
That's because their income is below the income threshold that requires a return.
"They probably paid more into the system then was required by law," she says.
So, how do you get that money back?
"The only way you can get back that excess payment is to file a tax return," she says.
These people aren't in violation of any laws, but if they want their money they have to file by April 15.
"No major changes should affect your taxes through 2013," she says.
She does want to remind people that fewer post offices are staying open until midnight this April 15 because of increased filing online.
