Damage Reported In Aftermath Of Quake
BELLEVUE (KDKA) -- In the aftermath of the 5.8 magnitude earthquake felt in the Pittsburgh area, there have been reports of minor damage.
Large chunks of rock fell from a chimney on top of an apartment building on North Harrison Avenue in Bellevue.
Tierney Kolago, a tenant, says at about 2 p.m., she felt the shaking.
"There are cracks in my walls that were not there before and it's very frightening," Kolago told KDKA-TV. "I don't know what's going to happen after this happened."
Kolago was at home with her daughter at the time and the situation was unnerving.
"I'm not used to this," she said. "I wasn't sure what to expect when I felt this. I didn't know what to do."
In nearby Brighton Heights, people walking on the sidewalk narrowly missed being hit by falling bricks from another chimney damaged by the quake.
This happened at an apartment house in the 300-block of California Avenue.
Anita Bandy was talking on the phone when she felt her apartment begin to shake and when she ran outside she saw the bricks falling.
"I was like , 'This is like an earthquake,'" she said. "I actually thought the building was falling apart. I was talking on the phone and said I think this is an earthquake. It was the strangest thing. Never been in anything like that before, the building was shaking and creaking."
Bandy says firefighters told her the chimney couldn't withstand the shaking because there was no mortar between the bricks.
