D.A. Calls Armored Truck Guard's Jailhouse Tattoos "Cold-Blooded"
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Last month it was revealed that over the summer police executed a search warrant for Kenneth Konias while he was in jail. They wanted to see the tattoos he made, allegedly in jail.
His defense attorney says the tattoos show his client needs help. But the prosecutor has a different view about those tattoos.
A year and a half ago, millions were missing from an armored truck in the Strip District and the body of Michael Haines was discovered in that truck. Konias, Haines partner, was on the run until he was found in a house at Pompano Beach, Fla.
But while he awaits trial, police got a search warrant so they could take pictures of the tattoos of money bags and a money sign on Konias hands.
When police did confront him, it led to a violent struggle, according to a motion filed by Konias' lawyer seeking to delay the trial.
On Thursday, for the first time, Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala gave his take on the significance of the tattoos.
"I think it's… I think it's pretty cold-blooded," Zappala said. "You know, basically you're acknowledging - I don't know whatever the rhetoric is in the jail - that you're a thief and you stole a great deal of money, that you took somebody's life in the meantime. So, my take was it was just cold-blooded."
The defense sees the tattoo incident as evidence that Konias is having mental problems. But the D.A. says his side plans to introduce that evidence at trial as evidence he shows no remorse.
Konias trial is now scheduled for November.
