Cyd Zeigler: Bigger Story Would Have Been If Michael Sam Didn't Get Drafted

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan)- It took until the 7th and final round of the NFL Draft, but DE Michael Sam from Missouri was taken with the 259th overall pick by the St. Louis Rams becoming the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL.

Cyd Zeigler, founder of Outsports.com, joined John Phillips on The Fan Sunday to discuss what the pick of Sam means.

"It's more about what we would be talking about if he wasn't picked," Zeigler said. "The talk would have been about the NFL being homophobic, but instead we are talking about how the NFL has welcomed an openly gay player."

Zeigler said he thinks it's time that everyone stops living in a fantasy world and realize we can all exist in this world together.

The NFL has accepted it, by many people's standards, and he adds that now, maybe it's time the world has accepted it.

Zeigler said he was just told yesterday that an openly gay player would never get picked by the NFL because it's a homophobic league.

"Nobody had to draft him, but the message it sends is clear," Zeigler said. "It sends a clear message that never again will any kid grow up in a world where you can't be gay in the NFL."
